Home with good travel Karma, greeting a cat, and one photo of the sun on the water. [Jul. 7th, 2008|09:33 am]

[Where am I? |home again.]
[Presently feeling | calm]
[Soundtrack |purring cat, loud mourning doves.]

We used to call it Tour Karma when we were traveling to see the Grateful Dead. Yesterday I discovered that the travel agent I'd worked with was even more confused about the process of actually getting places in an airport than I'd realized. But due to the kindness of several strangers I managed to get to the right place at the right time. It was a happy adventure with everything going just right. Oh, and I got upgraded to first class for free for part of the outgoing trip. *bg*

Through a completely amazing turn of luck I even got home about three hours earlier than scheduled as there was an earlier flight available which I just managed to catch. It's possible that was caused by some kind of divine intervention by Poseidon because there's no way I should have been able to fall out of one plane at a gate two down from the next one that was leaving in 20 minutes and still had an aisle seat in Economy Plus.

All of this meant that I got home at 9:30pm last night to an Indigo who plastered himself to me the minute I opened the front door. I may not be exactly objective about this, but he seems quite happy to see me. There was actual meowing and every time I move out of his line of sight he dashes up to me to say hello all over again. Sweet as that may be, it does interfere with say....actual sleeping. So if this post makes no sense, blame the cat.

Here's my favorite of the photos I took while away. Printed out at full size it would be about 19" wide by 13" high. The light tended towards hazy on the days when the osprey, eagles, and ravens were close enough to get in frame. But that's OK because the best part of vacation is the people and the memories. And I'm pickier than ever these days about my bird photos. Sometimes I think it's more fun just to take pictures of patterns in nature...but I'm picky about those as well.

Answer: How do you punctuate stammering speech? [Jul. 7th, 2008|08:18 am]

[info]verilyverity asks: How do you punctuate stammering speech?

with examples from Wonderfalls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, NCIS, and Stargate: SG-1

There are few characters continually afflicted with a stutter or stammering speech, but occasionally characters get tongue-tied and writers have to somehow punctuate that speech. So, how do you punctuate a word to show a stutter, or punctuate a sentence for stammering speech?

There are two pieces of punctuation that will be your companions for these particular speech impediments: the hyphen and the comma.

Stu-stu-stutter and, and, and Stammer )

HEY!

Last chapter of Post Captain this week!

READ IT! :D

Also, keep coming with suggestions for the movie viewing the weekend after...  It's still a bit up in the air whether we'll do the film or the extras. (Or both! *shock* Would anyone be up for a marathon viewing?)

Anyway, happy Monday!

- the four things I have to write in the next week
- Wall-E and Hancock
- The Stage Manager Mentality
- the once and future search for a college
- an update to the 101 in 1001 list

- Confessions of a Borrowed Partner

It's going to be a spammy day, I suspect.

Little fic, though. Just finished writing and posting a J/D Five Things. Should be unscreened tomorrow, I believe. For any gen readers, it's mostly gen. For the rest of you, there's plenty of subtext with some mild slashiness in the last one.

Popsicles for adults [Jul. 6th, 2008|09:01 pm]

janedavitt
On a whim, I bought these at the LCBO (wine store)
Blackfly Vodka Spiked Ice

They're popsicles made of fruit juice and vodka and come in blackcurrant/blueberry (which I'm munching on right now), cranberry/blueberry, and strawberry/rhubarb.

Quite tangy and refreshing, but they don't freeze solid (too much vodka, I guess) and I'd forgotten how the corners of your mouth get sliced up by the edges of the popsicle wrapper; they're way too wide at the top. And my hands are going numb. Maybe I'll shove a straw in.

Still... yummy. And, yes, the kids have been warned not to try them. They don't look like popsicles; packaged a whole different way.

There's about nineteen hours left before the responses to the most recent five-things prompts are revealed. Right now we've got lists from eight people, yay! But we'd always love to see more, and the prompt 'Five things about which Daniel and Sam agreed to disagree' is particularly in need.

Cucumber sandwich, anyone? [Jul. 6th, 2008|07:36 pm]

janedavitt
I was toying with the idea (in the face of David's scrunched up expression of sheer disgust) of doing the wall directly behind the bed a metallic shade to match the tops of the bed posts using something from the Ralph Lauren metallics line.

Then I saw this picture on their webpage.

http://www.ralphlaurenhome.com/rlhome/collection/sp08_mayfair_explore.asp

and gave this whimper of pure appreciation. Not the froufrou behind her, just that hat, that dress. So elegant.

Never in a million years could I pull that off but she looks SO PRETTY. Why can't we wear outfits like that now? Classic garden party.
